For fun on her down time

Here is what Rachel Flowers does for fun on her down time. She had a hard time when her instruments where stolen some weeks ago, but things changed for better now.

She began formulating this arrangement of Keith Emerson’s Piano Concerto No. 1 about two weeks ago on the day after she received her new flute. Apparently getting her Muramatsu was an inspirational event.

This was meant to be a test run for Jeanie Flowers’ new Zoom Q3HD – she had never used it before.  Apparently, Jeanie thought her daughter was going to play an excerpt, but Rachel just kept on going. It was a true trial by fire for Jeanie’s new video recording system. “I must say that I love it! There are a few things I will do differently next time around, but… my God! I captured this!!”, Jeanie Flowers says.

Long live Rachel Flowers!

The 6th Coachtulia

Yesterday, Friday 15th April 2011, we had our 6th “Coachtulia” at the Ateneo de Madrid. It is already half a year since we first started in november 2010. We gather to talk about different topics related to coaching. On this occasion our matter of discussion was: “Consciousness and the tricks of mind”.

De pie, de izq. a dcha.: Deme Salas, Paco Torres, Pilar Fernández, Victoria Caro, Michael Thallium, María. Sentados: Carmen Cayuela, Fran Alvarado y Jose Luis Romero.

Standing, left to right: Deme Salas, Paco Torres, Pilar Fernández, Victoria Caro, Michael Thallium, María. Sitting: Carmen Cayuela, Fran Alvarado y Jose Luis Romero.

We started by watching a video of a talk by Dan Dennett at a TED venue back in 2003. Then we started our debate and everyone contributed with their views to the this interesting topic about the consciousness and the tricks of our minds.

We also talked about some inventions by Ray Kurzweil and about the film The Transcendent Man: it seems that machines will also have a consciousness. Then, what will make the human beings different?

If you could not attend this coachtulia and you would like to share your views about this topic, please feel free to leave your comments below.

The next coachtulia, number 7, will be held in May and it will be entitled “Strategy, Leadership & The Soul” after the excellent book by Jennifer Sertl and Koby Huberman: Strategy, Leadership & The Soul.

Eric Whitacre & the limitless creativity

Michael Thallium in BallochJust a couple of minutes ago, on the Facebook wall of the Argentinian organist Cristina Ayala de Zudaire, I found a beautiful video of a composer I had never heard of: Eric Whitacre. This video, I guess, is the result of an arduous and ingenious work full of creativity and, in my opinion, very, very original. Eric Whitacre managed to gather 185 voices to create a “virtual choir” to do a virtual performance of his work “Lux Aurumque”. I don´t say anything else, I just leave you with this wonderful video for you to enjoy this beautiful and original Whitacre’s composition. An image and 185 voices are worth any of my words.

Love at first sight

“Love at first sight” is what I dare to say you feel when you watch and listen to Rachel Flowers interpreting this excerpt from “Memoirs of an officer and a gentleman”. This music was written by Keith Emerson back in the 70’s for the album Love Beach by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. And the title of that excerpt just comes right to talk about the love we must have felt, hundreds of people from everywhere in the world, to help Rachel replace her stolen instruments. Many people have collaborated in many different ways. With all due respect to all those anonymous and generous people who have helped and I cannot name, I would specially like to thank : Jeanie Flowers, Vaughan Flowers, Jeff Marx, Steve BrantOscar Hernandez y la Hueneme High SchoolSamy’s CameraTony OrtizKeith Emerson.

Inner Leadership to Entrepeneurs

II Jornadas técnicas de juventud y empleoToday was the Entrepeneur’s Day in Comunidad de Madrid, Spain, and I participated at the II Jornada técnica de juventud y empleo (2nd Technical Conference on Youth & Employment) organized by EMPESA Móstoles. My talk was called “Inner Leadership to Entrepreneurs” and I dedicated it to my dear friend Rachel Flowers, a 17 year old “supertalented” girl whose musical instruments were taken away recently by some burglars. The reason for my dedication was quite simple: to me Rachel represents the principles and message I wanted to get across. By the end of my talk, I recommended some readings which I would also like to recommend you here now:

The 5th Coachtulia

Yesterday, Friday 25th March at Ateneo de Madrid, the 5th Coachtulia took place. Coachtulia is a word consisting of two words: “coaching” and the Spanish word “tertulia” meaning “gathering”. On this occasion we discussed about “the neurology of change”. We talked about some concepts from the book “Evolve Your Brain” by Joe Dispenza. The neurons which activate together, they associate together. In other words, following the laws of repetition and association, a repeated action creates news neuronal connections and this produces a new mental structure… So, we can change regardless of our age! Of course, we need mental traning. It´s not that easy!

We also discussed about a video of neurobiologist Francisco Varela where he speaks about the difference between the know-what and the know-how.  If you wish to watch a video of Francisco Varela in English click HERE.
