Long live Rachel Flowers!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Next video is “homemade”. The song is based on an old tune by Rainbow. I changed the lyrics. I hope Ronnie James Dio would forgive me for that… Long live Rachel Flowers!

Rachel Flowers talks to Michael Thallium on her Yamaha

149045_1716465910247_1196193712_31958847_3549983_nRachel is a tremendous musician with a prodigious musical memory. This time, we were talking about her Yamaha organ and some of her Youtube videos. She also explains how Greg Lake and Keith Emerson met in Germany, apparently. (Rachel loves the music by ELP, The Nice and Keith Emerson). By the end of our conversation, since she is going to be 17 in a couple of days, I challenged her to improvise on the Happy Birthday theme (around minute 9:10)… She accepted the challenge!

If you wish to listen to Rachel’s impro on the Happy Birthday theme:

Breaking News: Rachel Flowers & the Hammond C3

Rachel trying out keyboards

Rachel trying out keyboards

“On December 12th 2010 Rachel Flowers participated in a flute workshop that was held in a home that might rightly be called Keyboard Central”, Jeanie Flowers said. Following the recital, potluck, and sight reading session, the hosts took Rachel on a grand tour to meet the various keyboards lurking throughout the house, which Rachel had a fantastic time trying out. As Rachel was leaving, she was asked to play “Karn Evil 9″ by Keith Emerson in order to give the Hammond C3 a good workout, and she happily obliged.

Jeanie Flowers, Rachel’s devoted mom, was glad to be able to capture that moment with her camera: “I was going to apologize for the amateurish camera work, and other imperfections in this video, but looking at it now, I don’t apologize for anything. The joy of the music transcends the imperfections.”

So, please, crank up the volume and enjoy Rachel’s first meeting with a Hammond C3 – complete with breaking glass (vibrated off of the Leslie cabinet), impromptu audience participation, and bad lighting. This video is what it is, and that’s a wonderful thing.

This is the first part with the glass breaking included:

And here the second part:

Petra dice

Many years ago, while navigating across the Caribbean, I wrote a song with my heart for a girl who never loved me. I remember that, when I finished it, I run to ask one of the Hungarian musicians working on the European Vision -the ship I used to work at that time- if I could borrow his equipment to record the song. And there I went with my Takamine and a microphone. The record was made somewhere between La Guadalope and Barbados back in 2002. Then I sent it to that girl -she was thousands of miles away in Europe- with a letter which was never replied.

Feelings change, and so change our lives as well. I feel very fortunate for the life I live and for all those people I have met and all the places I have known since then. Here you are that record and the lyrics of that song:

Petra dice

Lyrics & music by Michael Thallium

Petra dice y me asegura

que yo soy un soñador que navega

por un mar irreal de bondades,

de utopías, amor y amistades,

en un barco a la deriva

en el agua en que se baña mi vida.

Y quisiera demostrarle

y volver a hacer cosas bonitas,

An example, for example

We spend most of our lives asking ourselves if we do things right or wrong… and the fear to do them wrong prevents us from improving. Likewise, we sometimes fear to do them right. We have to be aware that we can take advantage of the instruments and resources we have at a certain moment, every day, and take the best out of them. As human beings we are full of resources. Here you are an example of it: Rachel Flowers. She uses her instruments and personal resources -no matter what limitations you have-to do what she feels passion for.

With or without you

One of my professional goals is to make people aware of their potential, so that they can give a response (responsibility) and get there where they really want to.

I love music and I decided to record this video covering a well-known tune by U2 With or without you.

U2. You can do anything better. Do what you feel passion for.
