A Message to Posterity

Remembering a great thinker of the 20th century, Betrand Russell, and also sharing his view on this topic, there are two things I’d like to say. One of them is intellectual and the other one is moral. The intelectual thing I’d like to say to that future generation regardless of whether they care or not, is this: whenever you’re studying or considering any matter or subject, ask yourself only what the facts are and what the truth is that those facts bear out. Do not let yourself be diverted either by what you wish to believe, or by what you think would have beneficent social effects if it were believed. Look only, and solely, at what the facts are. That is the intellectual thing I’d like to say.

As for the moral thing, it’s very simple: love is wise, hatred is foolish. In this world, so interconnected, intertwined and even entangled, in this world we have to learn to tolerate each other. We need to learn to put up with the fact that some people may say things that we don’t like. We can only live together in that way; if we are to live together and not perish together, we must learn and practise values such as charity and tolerance which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet. Maybe I should add one more thing: when you express what you think, behave with as much firmness as flexibility.

The Melody of Our Lives

If our speech is a score, punctuation is the notation of our verbal music. Punctuation tells us where to breathe, where to rest, when to speak up. As if it were a symphonic composition, punctuation gives meaning to our speech through pauses, pacing and phrasing. Then, every interpreter, each and everyone of us, we add our personal touch to send out the melody of our lives… And some of them, of course, will turn out to be more interesting, more attractive, than others.

Brevities on Trust and Sincerity

Árbol Confianza Michael Thallium

Trust may be the highest human motivation because it usually brings out the best of human beings. But the same way it happens with a tree, it takes time and patience to grow…

Sometimes there are walls you can gaze at for a while without daring to go through them because of fear to discover what is at the other side. It can also happen that we simply accept what is at our side of the wall, the one we can see. There are walls which have doors and, probably, knocking at them or just pushing them, would allow you to discover a new reality; and if the wall has no doors, you can always find a way to jump over it. In both cases you have to make an effort. And so is sincerity, too. Going through the wall of sincerity you can see both sides of reality: the one you see and the other’s. Sincerity is an invitation to other people to see our side of the wall and a challenge to discover the other person with respect.

An Air, a Melody and a Dance

DSC03624

Bärenreiter-Verlag 1977

Probably, Sebastian Bach took up the composition of his fourth book of keyboard exercises, known as “Aria with Variations” (BWV 988), by the end of the 1730s or beginning of 1740. It was published in 1741, when Bach was 56 years old. The denomination of “aria” (”air” in English) is not the same as the “aria” in opera. For Sebastian Bach “aria” meant “melody”. In the case of this particular work, that melody is geared in a ternary rhythm of sarabande, a dance of Spanish origin (zarabanda, in Spanish), but it was popularized and introduced in Europe through the French court of king Louis XIV. Thus, this work, whose main theme I reproduce below on a video, is dance, melody and air at the same time.
